Bringing your newborn to their first photography session might feel a little overwhelming, especially when you're still adjusting to life with a new baby.
Will my baby sleep? What if they cry the entire time? Do I need to bring outfits? What if we need to stop for feeding?
These are all questions I hear from parents, and I promise, you don't need to have everything figured out before you arrive.
At Mavi Photography Studio in Salem, New Hampshire, newborn sessions are designed to be calm, comfortable, and completely centered around your baby.
Here's a little look at what you can expect.
A Slow, Relaxed Start
First things first: there's no need to rush.
Newborn sessions typically last around two to three hours, but that doesn't mean your baby will be photographed the entire time.
We leave plenty of room for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and all those little breaks newborns need.
Some babies fall asleep almost immediately. Others need a little extra time and a few cuddles before they're ready.
Both are completely normal.
I follow your baby's cues throughout the session, allowing us to create beautiful photographs without putting pressure on your little one.
A Warm, Cozy Studio Ready for Your Baby
Before you arrive, I'll have the studio prepared with carefully selected wraps, blankets, headbands, and props.
My style is soft, simple, and timeless. I love creamy neutrals, gentle textures, and delicate details that keep the focus exactly where it belongs: on your baby.
You don't need to purchase special newborn outfits or bring your own props unless there's something meaningful you'd like to include.
Maybe it's a handmade blanket from a grandparent or a tiny keepsake you've been saving. I always love incorporating personal touches when they work with the session.
We Usually Begin with Family Photographs
I love starting newborn sessions with family portraits while everyone is fresh and ready.
This is our chance to capture those first photographs together as a family, including parents and older siblings.
You don't have to know how to pose or worry about where to put your hands. I'll gently guide you through everything.
Sometimes the most meaningful images are the simplest ones: holding your baby close, looking down at their tiny face, or sharing a quiet moment together.
And if you have an older child joining us, don't worry about expecting them to sit perfectly still. We'll keep things relaxed and work with their personality.
Then It's Time for Baby's Individual Portraits
Once we've finished the family photographs, we'll move on to your baby's individual setups.
Depending on how your little one is feeling, we may use a few different wraps, colors, and backgrounds.
I love creating a mix of simple, timeless portraits and softly styled images that highlight all those tiny newborn details.
Little fingers, curled-up toes, sleepy expressions, and those sweet newborn stretches are all worth remembering.
Every baby is different, so the number of setups can vary. Rather than rushing through a checklist of poses, I focus on creating a beautiful collection of photographs while keeping your baby comfortable.
What If My Baby Doesn't Sleep?
This might be the most common concern I hear from parents.
And my answer is always the same: that's okay!
While sleepy babies often allow for more traditional curled-up newborn poses, awake photographs can be just as beautiful.
Those curious little eyes and early expressions are part of your baby's story, too.
If your baby needs extra soothing or prefers to be held, we'll adjust the session around them.
There's no expectation for your newborn to behave a certain way.
What Should You Bring?
The good news is that you don't need to pack much beyond your usual baby essentials.
I recommend bringing:
- Extra diapers and wipes
- Milk or feeding supplies
- A pacifier, if your baby uses one
- An extra outfit for your baby
- Any meaningful keepsake you'd love to include
For parents and siblings, soft neutral colors such as cream, ivory, beige, oatmeal, or muted earthy tones photograph beautifully with my studio style.
Most importantly, choose something comfortable that makes you feel like yourself.
When Will You Receive Your Photographs?
After your session, I'll carefully select and professionally edit your images, paying attention to natural skin tones, soft colors, and the little details that make each photograph special.
Your finished photographs will be delivered through a private online gallery, where you can easily view and download your images.
These are memories you'll be able to return to long after the newborn stage has passed.
Your Baby Doesn't Have to Be Perfect. Neither Do You.
If there's one thing I hope every parent knows before their newborn session, it's this:
You don't need a perfectly sleepy baby, perfectly coordinated outfits, or a perfectly organized morning.
You just need to show up with your little one.
I'll take care of the styling, guide you through the photographs, and make space for all the little pauses along the way.
Because these early days aren't about perfection. They're about remembering just how tiny your baby once was.
