Pregnancy is such a unique season of life. Some days seem to move slowly, and then suddenly you're folding tiny clothes, preparing the nursery, and counting down the weeks until you meet your baby.

Somewhere in the middle of all that excitement, you might start thinking about maternity photos.

One of the questions I hear most often from expecting mothers is, *"How many weeks pregnant should I be for my maternity photoshoot?"*

The answer depends a little on your pregnancy and how you're feeling, but there's a window I generally recommend.

The Sweet Spot: 28–34 Weeks Pregnant

For most expecting mothers, **28–34 weeks is an ideal time for maternity photography**.

By this point, your baby bump is usually beautifully visible, making it a wonderful time to capture the changes your body has gone through.

You're also more likely to feel comfortable moving around, changing outfits, and enjoying the session than you might during the very last weeks of pregnancy.

Of course, every pregnancy is different. Some moms have a noticeable bump much earlier, while others prefer to wait a little longer.

There's no single week that works perfectly for everyone.

Can You Take Maternity Photos Earlier?

Absolutely!

Some expecting mothers prefer to schedule their photos around 24–27 weeks, especially if they're feeling more energetic or want a particular seasonal backdrop.

An earlier session can also be a good option if you're expecting multiples or have been advised that you may deliver earlier.

The most important thing is choosing a time when you feel comfortable and can enjoy the experience.

Is 35 Weeks Too Late for Maternity Photos?

Not necessarily!

I've found that many moms worry they've missed their chance if they're already approaching the end of their pregnancy.

While I generally recommend scheduling earlier, beautiful maternity portraits are still possible later in pregnancy.

The main consideration is your comfort. You may feel more tired, need additional breaks, or prefer simpler poses.

If you're further along, a relaxed studio session can be a lovely option.

And if you have any pregnancy-related activity restrictions, always follow your healthcare professional's guidance.

When Should You Book Your Maternity Photographer?

I recommend reaching out during your second trimester, even if your ideal session date is still a few months away.

Booking early gives us more flexibility when choosing a date, location, and time of day.

This is especially helpful if you're dreaming of outdoor maternity photos during a particular season.

Spring blossoms, warm summer evenings, colorful fall foliage, and soft winter light all create very different looks.

Planning ahead allows us to choose a setting that feels right for you.

Studio or Outdoor Maternity Photos?

This is one of my favorite things to help expecting moms decide.

Both options can be beautiful, but they create different experiences.

Studio Maternity Photography

My studio in Salem, New Hampshire, is perfect if you love a clean, elegant, and timeless look.

Think soft backgrounds, gentle lighting, and simple portraits that keep the focus on you and your growing baby.

Studio sessions also give us a comfortable, private space without worrying about the weather.

I have a selection of maternity dresses available for clients to use, so you don't necessarily need to shop for something new.

Outdoor Maternity Photography

If you love natural light and a more relaxed atmosphere, an outdoor maternity session might be a wonderful fit.

I photograph maternity sessions in beautiful locations around Southern New Hampshire and Northern Massachusetts, including Benson Park in Hudson, NH.

Outdoor sessions offer room to move, natural scenery, and those beautiful candid moments between you and your partner.

I especially love photographing outdoors when the light is soft and warm.

Whether you prefer a quiet park, open greenery, or a beach setting, we can discuss a location that matches your vision.

What Should You Wear for Maternity Photos?

You don't need an elaborate wardrobe to create beautiful maternity photographs.

I often recommend soft, neutral colors like ivory, cream, beige, and muted earthy tones.

Flowing dresses can add beautiful movement, while fitted dresses highlight the shape of your bump.

For studio sessions, simple fabrics and timeless silhouettes photograph especially well.

If you're including your partner or children, coordinating colors rather than wearing identical outfits usually creates a more natural look.

Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Should Your Partner or Children Join the Session?

Of course!

While maternity photography is about celebrating your pregnancy, it's also about documenting the people who are waiting to meet your baby.

Some moms love having the session entirely to themselves, while others want to include their partner and older children.

Both are beautiful choices.

We can create a mix of individual portraits and photographs together, giving you memories of this chapter as a family.

A Little Reminder for Expecting Moms

You don't have to wait until you feel perfectly ready to be photographed.

Pregnancy can be beautiful and exhausting, sometimes all in the same day.

You might not feel like yourself every morning, and that's completely understandable.

But one day, these photographs may remind you of a version of yourself you almost forgot: the anticipation, the quiet excitement, and the love you felt for someone you hadn't met yet.

You deserve to be part of those memories, too.
